Detainees inside Delaney Hall have put their bodies on the line in a hunger/labor strike to demand basic human dignity. It is unacceptable that 300 detainees are being subjected to inhumane conditions, with reports of inadequate and unsanitary facilities, rotten food, and severe medical neglect of detainees, especially those with serious medical conditions.
Furthermore, the aggressive tactics used by ICE agents against protestors are entirely unacceptable. The use of pepper spray and batons by ICE agents against families and allies in solidarity with detainees demonstrates a dangerous disregard for public safety and the law, revealing a broader pattern of enforcement agencies acting with complete impunity.
We must demand an immediate, independent investigation into the abuses at Delaney Hall and accountability for the officers involved in assaulting demonstrators. We call on local and federal leadership to intervene and support the detainees demands: meet directly with Governor Mikie Sherrill, immediately release from detention the medically vulnerable, elderly, and youth, a meaningful review of immigration cases and habeas filings, and an end to what they describe as coercive pressure to sign deportation or voluntary departure documents.
True justice requires an end to the criminalization of immigrants and a complete overhaul of a system that prioritizes punishment over human dignity
Our friends El Pueblo Unido of Atlantic City, Cosecha New Jersey, Resistencia en Acción NJ and many others have been on the ground since day 1 of the strike supporting detainees and their family members.
Read letters collected and translated by Cosecha NJ that were written by detainees currently being held at Delaney Hall about what they are going through here.
